If one breaks down the Chinese characters, “Chong” stands for “thousands of miles” and “Qing” refers to vastness. The city Chongqing is thus famous for being eclectic and inclusive.

In order to implement Chongqing University's philosophy of striving to become "comprehensive, research-oriented, and international", and to gather top academic talents from home and abroad to carry out academic research with high starting point and high quality, on May 27, 2011, the Office of the President of Chongqing University approved the establishment of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The Institute has been founded to provide important academic support for humanities and social sciences disciplines and to cultivate talents in relevant areas of studies.

On July 1, 2011, the Institute for Advanced Studies was officially established. The Institute hired an academic committee consisting of renowned professors from home and abroad to join its faculties to make plans for academic research and teaching.Since its establishment, the Institute has always adhered to several principles: it serves the overall development of Chongqing University; it is led by the visions of renowned scholars at home and abroad; it gathers talents from all over the world, and explores a unique path for development. Since its establishment, the Institute has achieved rapid growth in all aspects, and is gaining attention day by day. At present, there are nearly 60 full-time faculty members, including 6 professors, 31 associate professors, and 19 assistant professors.

The Institute for Advanced Studies has the following missions. It builds competitive academic platforms and strong research teams to support widely influential research in the humanities and social sciences. Under the leadership of the University and the Faculty of Humanities, the Institute forms a high-level, research-oriented team of professors in preparation for a liberal arts college. It further supports the recent field-based educational reforms and provides liberal arts courses for the whole University. Adopting the "academy" model to carry out liberal arts education, the Institute cultivates all-around skills of students majoring in liberal arts. The Institute also adopts a step-by-step strategy to build a center for academic research and policy-related consultation in the field of humanities and social sciences which aims to be influential in Chongqing and southwest China.

In July 2020, Chongqing University promulgated “the Action Plan for the Revitalization of Liberal Arts Disciplines of Chongqing University,” proposing to establish the College of Humanities on the basis of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences and the Liberal Arts (Boya) College. It is expected that by 2025, Chongqing University will build its liberal arts disciplines into a pattern in line with a first-rate university—it will be well-structured, moderate in scale, and distinctive in character with potentials for further development. The College of Humanities will gradually develop doctoral programs in literature, history, and philosophy, and the number of faculty members in related and interdisciplinary fields will reach 120-150. The College will continue to focus on its three most important tasks—academic research, teaching, and support for general education—aiming to build liberal arts departments that are competitive in related fields.

We sincerely welcome scholars from home and abroad to join the Institute in various ways!
